—Have you ever been to Viareggio carnival? Is it worth it?
—It’s a little decadent … It makes me sad.»
—Interesting, you just convinced me, I’ll go!

Although not as popular as the Venetian, the Carnival of Viareggio is one of the most important and acclaimed in Italy. I am from Tenerife, in the Canary Islands, where the carnival is the most outstanding festivity. It is the first big celebration of the year. It involves a massive exhibition of colour, enthusiasm, and frenzy, and that is why, probably, it drives me to discover other facets and versions of the same event. It is said that “diversity is equal to cultural richness.”

Federico Fellini promoted the unique Carnevale di Viareggio in some of his films. The Viareggio carnival parade features big sculptures made of paper-pulp — a mix of water, glue, plaster, and paper —, carried on allegorical carriages along the promenade. Since its inception in 1873, the themes are always connected to social and political satire. These enormous paper sculptures, quite similar to the ninots showed in the Fallas of Valencia (Spain), are made from a previous clay model and decorated with acrylic paints and tempera. Due to their lightness — the figures are empty inside — this mouldable material allows creating figures of huge volumes. The Burlamacco is the official «maschera (mask)».

A mí me entristece.
