Bridges of Florence (not only Ponte Vecchio)

They say that what separates life from death is a river and each one chooses his own bridge to cross it. All the bridges of Florence, with the only exception of marvellous Ponte Vecchio, were destroyed by the Germans on the night of the 3rd of August, 1944, during the Second World War. Fortunately they have been rebuilt later.

Ponte Ferroviario serves as a passage to the Florence-Rome high-speed train station. Ponte di Varlungo connects the provincial highway 127 and the highway (entrance Firenze Sud). Ponte Giovanni da Verrazzano was built in the sixties and it is situated near Ponte di San Niccolò, it connects the neighbourhoods of Gavinana and Campo di Marte through the Lungarno Cristoforo Colombo and Piazza Ravenna. Ponte di San Niccolò was built between 1836 and 1837.

The Medieval bridges as Ponte alle Grazie, built in 1237 entirely of stone, has nine arches, and it is located in the widest part of the Arno River. On the other hand, one of the symbols of the city, Ponte Vecchio crosses the river at its narrowest section. Its first construction dates from Roman times, but it was damaged during the 1333 floods to be rebuilt in 1345.

Continuing with Ponte Santa Trinità, named after the Church Santissima Trinità, it was first a wooden bridge back in 1253, which collapsed in 1259 to be rebuilt as a stone bridge after the 1333 floods. Ponte alla Carraia was built also with wood in 1218 under the name of «Ponte Nuovo». Similarly it was destroyed by the floods of 1269 and 1333. The current name is taken from the frequent carriages — carraia — passing through it.

Keeping up with the modern bridges, Ponte Amerigo Vespucci was built in 1949 and it was the first one connecting San Frediano district with the city centre. Ponte alla Vittoria was built in 1836. Ponte della Tramvia unites Piazza Paolo Uccello with Viale Stendhal in the Parque delle Cascine, and allows crossing the Arno River by Tram line T1.

Passerella dell’Isolotto, also known as Passerella delle Cascine, connects the Isolotto quarter (Lungarno dei Pioppi) with Parco delle Cascine (Piazzale Kennedy). Ponte all’Indiano, also called Viadotto dell’Indiano, is one of the most recent bridges in Florence, uniting the vicinities of Peretola and Isolotto. Ponte dell’autostrada A1 closes the collection of bridges in Florence.
