«The Cleaner:» Marina Abramović at Palazzo Strozzi

Florence is alive and wants to express itself. Fondazione Palazzo Strozzi presents a retrospective of world-wide acclaimed performance artist Marina Abramović. The show opens its doors on September 21, the same day that L’Eredità delle Donne festival begins. During four months, till January 20, 2019, Florence and particularly the Palazzo Strozzi hosts an exhibition that pays tribute to the fifty-year career of one of the heavyweights of Action Art. She is the first woman that has a “solo exhibition” at the Palazzo Strozzi.

Abramović attended the crowded press conference at the Cinema Odeon Firenze, with a sober total black look contrasting with her attitude, especially sympathetic, humorous and enigmatic. Abramović is referential amidst her investigations focused on testing the limits of her own body. But also, she challenges the audience to take action in her performances, with the purpose to examine similarly the limits, empathy, and relationship of the general public with the body of others, that of the artist. Abramović stated without batting an eyelid: “I invented the performance and anybody else.” When female journalists asked her about the trinomial art-woman-feminism, Abramović distanced herself answering: “I do not think that art should be defined in terms of gender, male and female. There are only two types of art: good art and bad art.” Among other things she also asserted without blushing: “We have to use technology, but technology should not use us. I need to clarify that for me, Instagram is not art.”

The event brings together more than a hundred works, providing a comprehensive selection of pieces created between the seventies and the beginning of the 21st century. The expo presents a wide spectrum of formats that range from videos, photographs, to paintings, objects, and installations. One of the milestones are the live recreations of her most famous performances, which will be carefully executed by a group of performers specially chosen and trained for this show. By exhibiting in this space, Marina Abramović will have her first opportunity to interact with Renaissance architecture. The experience will consolidate the relationship of the artist with Italy even further.

The exhibit has been curated by Arturo Galansino of the Fondazione Palazzo Strozzi, and Lena Essling of the Moderna Museet, Stockholm/Malmö, together with Tine Colstrup, of the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art, and Susanne Kleine, of the Bundeskunsthalle, Bonn.

Florencia está viva y quiere expresarse. La retrospectiva que rinde tributo al medio siglo de carrera de Marina Abramović, «Marina Abramović – The Cleaner», abre sus puertas al público el 21 de septiembre en el Palazzo Strozzi, el mismo día que comienza el festival feminista L’Eredità delle Donne. Se trata de la primera mujer sobre la que Palazzo Strozzi ha preparado una solo exhibition.  Marina Abramović asistió a la concurrida rueda de prensa, convocada en el Cinema Odeon Firenze, vestida de negro y mostrándose especialmente simpática, divertida y enigmática.

La artista convertida en obra de arte y enamorada de Italia no se corta en afirmar: «Yo inventé la performance y no ninguna otra persona». Cuando las periodistas (mujeres) comenzaron a hacerle preguntas en torno al trinomio arte-mujer-feminismo, Abramović se desmarcó respondiendo: «No creo que el arte se deba definir en términos de géneros masculino y femenino; pues solo hay dos tipos de arte, el arte bueno y el arte malo». Entre otras perlas, también soltó: «Debemos usar la tecnología, pero no la tecnología a nosotros. Y tengo que aclarar que para mí Instagram no es arte».

Hasta el 20 de enero de 2019, Palazzo Strozzi acoge esta gran retrospectiva dedicada a Marina Abramović, una de las figuras más célebres y controvertidas del arte contemporáneo, cuyas obras han revolucionado la idea de la performance, poniendo a prueba su cuerpo y su potencial expresivo al límite. La muestra reúne más de un centenar de obras y proporciona una visión exhaustiva de las creaciones más aclamadas de una carrera que abarca desde la década de 1970 hasta la de 2000: vídeos, fotografías, pinturas, objetos, instalaciones y recreaciones en vivo de sus performances ejecutadas en Palazzo Strozzi por un grupo de artistas especialmente elegidos y entrenados para la ocasión.

Cabe señalar que la retrospectiva es el resultado de una colaboración directa con la artista. Palazzo Strozzi vuelve a ofrecer un espacio expositivo integrado, dando a Marina Abramović su primera oportunidad de interactuar con la arquitectura renacentista, destacando la estrecha relación que siempre ha tenido, y todavía mantiene, con Italia. La muestra está comisariada por Arturo Galansino, de la Fondazione Palazzo Strozzi, y Lena Essling, de Moderna Museet, junto con Tine Colstrup, del Museo de Arte Moderno de Louisiana, y Susanne Kleine, de la Bundeskunsthalle, Bonn.
